Webinar Description:
The first part of the webinar is an overview of the Quick Bite presentation on yielding at roundabouts. It is known that roundabouts are a desirable intersection control strategy and have a positive safety performance record strategy. This presentation will provide details on studies highlighting yielding to pedestrians at roundabouts. It will highlight design characteristics that contribute to lower yielding rates as well as design considerations to promote higher yielding rates. The presentation will also include examples to help pedestrians at the crossings for roundabouts.
This webinar also includes a presentation on an example roundabout with high pedestrian crossings, on a university campus. The University of Connecticut, basketball capital of the world, has its first roundabout on the campus at one of the busiest intersections for students, employees in crossing the roundabout as well as vehicular traffic. This presentation will include a review of the key roundabout study and design issues with the roundabout and the results, including yielding to pedestrians, game day events with special event plans and 10k+ spectators leaving Gampel pavilion and accessing the roundabout.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the benefits of roundabouts over other intersection control.
- Summarize the potential issues with lower yielding rates for pedestrian crossings.
- Explain design considerations for increasing yielding rates for pedestrian crossings.
- Summarize design considerations for roundabouts at high pedestrian crossing locations such as college campuses.
