Traffic Management for Planned, Unplanned, and Emergency Events

February 5, 2021 @ 3:30 pm - 4:30 pm EST

When: Tuesday, March 2, 2021, 3:30 — 4:30 PM ET

This webinar was developed by the ITE Traffic Engineering Council

Webinar Description:

This webinar is based off Chapter 16 of the Traffic Engineering Handbook.

The design of regional and local road systems is based on the efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians during predictable and routine travel conditions. It is impossible for designers to take into account every eventuality that restricts capacity, closes lanes, generates peaks in demand or hazardous travel conditions.

We will also cover the best practices regarding communicating and responding to changing road conditions that impact public safety due to planned, unplanned, and emergency events. Numerous methods will be discussed that are intended to assist in maintaining the mobility of the general public as well as facilitating the mobility of first responders.

Finally, this webinar will provide examples of the coordination and decision making during actual emergencies and special events including lessons learned.

Learning Objectives:
Attendees of this webinar will be able to:

  • Explain the differences between planned, unplanned, and emergency events (special events).
  • Identify the common impacts of special events on the transportation system.
  • Understand strategies that can be utilized to mitigate the impacts of special events on the transportation system.
  • Recognize lessons learns from the outcomes of real-life scenarios.

  • Brandon Wilson, P.E.,Transportation Engineering Associate II | City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation
  • Pamela Marie Murray-Tuite, Professor | Clemson University
