Summary:
This webinar will provide an overview about the FHWA cooperative driving automation (CDA) Program and discuss port operations and the challenges in the port drayage process. The webinar will then dive into the application of CDA for port drayage as a promising way to overcome congestion, reduce delays at ports, and support drayage truck drivers to overcome challenges associated with the hours-of-service regulations while increasing productivity for ports.
The Saxton Transportation Operations Lab (STOL) of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has been conducting research on connected and automated vehicles to develop open-source software for various CDA applications. One such application is the short haul transportation of shipping containers, known as drayage, from/to ports to/from storage and staging areas within a short travel distance. The primary motivation for the proposed concept is to reduce truck congestion in and around container terminals to reduce drayage delays within terminals. This webinar will provide an overview about the FHWA CDA Program and discuss port operations and the challenges in the port drayage process. The webinar will then dive into the application of CDA for port drayage as a promising way to overcome congestion, reduce delays at ports, and support drayage truck drivers to overcome challenges associated with the hours-of-service regulations while increasing productivity for ports.
